An open damper regulates oxygen to the fire and provides an exit for the smoke and exhaust.

A damper is a movable plate usually made of metal. It is inside the chimney and acts as a valve, either allowing air to escape, keeping cold air out, or preventing warm air from escaping up the chimney.

What Are The Different Types of Dampers?

Throat Damper

This is a damper located just inside the firebox. There is a lever that you would adjust to allow air in or out. The throat damper is most common in fireplaces. It tends to be easy to operate. There are some cons; the seal tends to be loose, and with exposure to moisture, it can rust or warp over time. This type of damper is also less energy efficient than others.

Top-Mount Damper

This damper is installed at the very top of the chimney. It is operated by a pull chain that runs through the chimney to the top-mount damper. One of the pros is its very tight seal, which improves energy efficiency. As it is at the top of the chimney, it also helps keep out animals, debris, and rain. There is, however, a higher upfront cost. A crew will have to install the top-mount damper from the roof.
